Casey DeSantis Responds to Karla Hernandez Mats’ “Callous, Insensitive and Ignorant” Insults

“As First Lady, I will make it my mission to let all parents across this state know of the ‘hate in your heart.’”

Florida's First Lady Casey DeSantis speaks out about Karla Hernandez Mats “callous, insensitive and ignorant” campaign rhetoric.

Karla Hernandez Mats, who The Florida Standard called out for enforcing an illegal COVID-19 vaccine mandate upon her union staff, is in hot water with Florida's First Lady.

In a recently released video, Charlie Crist's running mate Karla Hernandez Mats tells the audience, “I am an activist as well.” She then explains how her experience as a “sped teacher” (special education) who worked with “emotionally handicapped” students qualifies her to “deal with the dysfunctional legislature.”

The First Lady responded to the video on Twitter, citing the exact phrasing that Crist used previously to attack DeSantis’ voters, whom he said have “hate in your heart.”

"As a mom, I am disgusted and sickened by the callous, insensitive, and ignorant comments by someone who claims to be an advocate for children.” the First Lady said in a statement to The Florida Standard.

“Karla: saying that children with unique abilities are ‘dysfunctional’ and equating them to your political opponents is beyond a new low. As First Lady, I will make it my mission to let all parents across this state know of the ‘hate in your heart.’ Shame on you, just shame on you,” Casey DeSantis added.

The First Lady recently announced an expansion to her Hope Florida - A Pathway to Prosperity initiative which aims to “guide Floridians on an individualized path to prosperity by focusing on community collaboration between the private sector, faith-based community, nonprofits, and government entities to break down traditional community silos in an effort to maximize resources and uncover opportunities.”
