DeSantis Backs Jordan in Speaker Race, Rails Against House Chaos
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — Ron DeSantis said he hoped to see Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) elected as the new House Speaker during an interview with NewsNation on Wednesday. DeSantis blamed D.C. lawmakers and Republicans amid a chaotic fight for speakership as the federal government narrowly avoided a shutdown.
CHICKENS WITH THEIR HEADS CUT OFF
“I think the problem with what they’re doing in D.C. is the drama’s not leading to any result,” DeSantis said. “It’s like they’re chickens with their heads cut off… I think they need to get their act together and focus on the American people.”
DeSantis’ comments came after Jordan failed to garner enough votes for the second time. Four Republican holdouts from the Florida congressional delegation offered varied reasons for opposing Jordan, including support for Steve Scalise, who dropped out of the contest.
“I was hoping that Jim Jordan would get elected,” DeSantis said. “He has my support. I think he could do a good job.”
“HOW WE ROLL IN FLORIDA”
“But you know, what I see is just the contrast between what’s going on in D.C. and how we roll in Florida,” DeSantis continued. “We don’t do political empty calories down here. We don’t do the sideshow. We don’t do the drama. We just deliver results across the board.”
Jordan needs 217 votes – but only received 199 during the last vote – to become the new House speaker. As of yesterday, 22 members of his own party voted against him.
“They can’t get their act together,” DeSantis said. “Meanwhile, we’ve got an open border, we’ve got rising prices. We’ve got issues with crime in the streets. And of course, you now have more instability around the world. And voters want to see results.”
Former President Trump also announced his support for Jordan earlier this month.
“He is a STRONG on Crime, Borders, our Military/Vets, & 2nd Amendment,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Jim, his wife, Polly, & family are outstanding – He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”
So far, Jordan has indicated he will continue to battle for the position telling reporters on Wednesday that he’ll keep talking to members and seek out votes.
