Florida Group Defending Porn in Libraries Objects to Finance Book that Quotes Bible Verses
LAND O’ LAKES, FLORIDA — A Left-wing group fighting to keep Florida schools from removing sexually explicit library books is upset that students might be getting financial advice from a conservative Christian who likes to cite Holy Writ when dishing out his wisdom.
Earlier this year, the Florida Department of Education approved the use of financial guru Dave Ramsey’s “Foundations in Personal Finance 4th edition” in public schools.
After climbing his way out of a mountain of debt, Ramsey has spent the past three decades helping thousands of Americans do the same by establishing responsible living and spending habits.
Last week, NPR published portions of a public records request that showed a few dozen objections to the book from local residents. The records request was obtained by The Florida Freedom to Read Project – a group that defends the use of taxpayer dollars to put sexually explicit books in the hands of young readers, including one book that shows students how to use butt plugs.
Among the concerns raised in the article is Ramsey’s use of Bible verses. One screenshot from the records requests shows a quote from Proverbs 22:7, which says “The rich rule over the poor and the borrower is a slave to the lender.”
Ramsey adds to this: “Don’t become a prisoner or slave to debt!”
“God forbid we have a few Bible proverbs in there,” a Pasco County Schools employee told The New York Post. “Considering all of the controversial — and that’s putting it mildly — subject matter we see in books and textbooks these days, that's a laugh in my opinion.”
“Let’s be honest,” the source added. “This is about the profile of the writer, not the content.”
The Florida Freedom to Read Project has also objected to the state’s decision to let schools use PragerU, a prominent nonprofit that presents conservative viewpoints on a wide array of social, political and historical issues.
