TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — Jennifer Canady is on track to become Florida’s first female Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, according to a new report from Florida Politics.
The freshman lawmaker’s unofficial victory for the position followed an “intense, behind-the-scenes competition between her, fellow Tampa Bay lawmaker Kevin Steele and northeast Florida’s Jessica Baker,” the outlet noted.

Canady, a Lakeland-based educator and wife of Florida Supreme Court Justice Charles Canady, will lead the Chamber in 2028 – assuming she is reelected and Republicans retain their majority in the House.
Canady’s first Legislative Session was marked by her championing of the Heartbeat Protection Act, which prohibits abortions after a fetus has surpassed 6 weeks gestation.
