The Big Ban: Weekly Legislative Report – April 17, 2023

The sixth week of Florida’s 60-day legislative session was all about action: the legislature cracked down on a series of hot-button issues, including minors at drag shows, abortion, and entering the opposite gender’s bathroom.

In one of the biggest stories of the 2023 session, Governor DeSantis signed a six-week abortion ban into law, securing Florida as one of the strictest anti-abortion states in the country.

In other news, the highly contested defamation bill is barely keeping its head above water, following its postponement two weeks in a row. Though scheduled for this week, will the strong criticism cause it to drown?

As the seventh week of session begins, we can expect the same fast-tempo beat characteristic of past weeks. On this week’s agenda: death penalty for child rapists, politicized school board elections, increased social media restrictions – and much more.
