The Future Of Social Security Is In Our Hands

Join AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins for a live-streamed bipartisan discussion on the future of Social Security on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Sponsored by AARP Florida.

As we celebrate the 88th birthday of the Social Security Act this year, it's remarkable to reflect on how this vital safety net has evolved over the years. Initially conceived as a “comprehensive package of protection” against life's unpredictable challenges, Social Security has become a lifeline for millions of
Floridians. Today, Social Security funds often serve as a vital support system, helping Floridians cover daily expenses and meet their financial obligations. Astonishingly, more than 5 million residents in the Sunshine State, that's more than one in five, rely on Social Security benefits. Among them, Florida's 3.6
million retired workers constitute nearly 75% of all beneficiaries., demonstrating the critical role it plays in our lives. Social Security is the only inflation-protected guaranteed retirement income that protects you throughout your lifetime.

But Social Security isn't just about financial support; it's an economic engine that fuels Florida's prosperity. Those who receive these benefits don't hoard them; they invest in goods and services, boosting business sales and job opportunities. This ripple effect injects a staggering $81.7 billion into our state's economy each year, benefiting businesses and workers alike.

However, there's a looming threat on the horizon. If our elected officials fail to act in the next decade, Social Security faces a potential 20% cut, translating to an average loss of $4,000 per year for hardworking individuals like you. AARP understands that you've diligently contributed to this fund, and you deserve the security you've earned. Social Security is not a political piggy bank; it's your hard-earned money.

That's why AARP has been at the forefront of the battle to protect and preserve Social Security for six decades, and we pledge to continue leading the charge for current and future generations.
