PALM BEACH, FLORIDA — In a statement posted Thursday on Truth Social and sent via email to thousands, former President Trump verbally attacked Governor Ron DeSantis with a series of accusations. In the statement, he called DeSantis an “average Republican governor with great Public Relations.”
“Ron came to me in desperate shape in 2017 – he was politically dead, losing in a landslide to a very good Agriculture Commissioner, Adam Putnam, who was loaded up with cash and great poll numbers. Ron had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse him, he could win,” Trump wrote.
The irate comments come days after Trump told reporters that he voted for Ron DeSantis for Florida governor. Trump has repeatedly said that it would be unwise if DeSantis decided to run against him. “If I faced him, I’d beat him like I would beat everyone else,” Trump told Yahoo Finance last October. “I think most people would drop out, I think he would drop out.”
A FLORIDA RED WAVE
DeSantis ushered in a true red wave in Florida on Tuesday. The incumbent governor beat opponent Charlie Crist by more than 1.5 million votes. The governor’s re-election campaign raised $200 million, an extraordinary feat, with $90 million still left over.
With a landslide win in Florida, the governor is seen by some as a potential 2024 presidential hopeful. But DeSantis has not said if he has plans to run for president in 2024. DeSantis’ office did not immediately respond to The Florida Standard’s request for comment.
“A BIG MISTAKE”
When DeSantis endorsed Colorado Republican Senate nominee Joe O’Dea, Trump called it a “big mistake.” O’Dea told CNN that he would “actively” oppose Trump if he ran for President in 2024.
On Tuesday, Trump told the Wall Street Journal that if DeSantis did run for president, “I will tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering. I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign.”
“And now, Ron DeSanctimonious is playing games! The Fake News asks him if he’s going to run if President Trump runs, and he says, ‘I’m only focused on the Governor's race, I’m not looking into the future.’ Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that's really not the right answer," Trump posted Thursday in the statement.
On Friday, Trump went after Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin saying he was “having a hard time with the Dems in Virginia – But he’ll get it done,” Trump posted. “Young Kin (now that’s an interesting take. Sounds Chinese, doesn’t it?) in Virginia couldn’t have won without me,” the former president wrote on Truth Social. “I Endorsed him, did a very big Trump Rally for him telephonically, got MAGA to Vote for him – or he couldn’t have come close to winning.”
