GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA — Two people were killed and another person was injured during a shooting early Sunday morning just a few blocks from the University of Florida campus.

Gainesville Police were conducting crowd control as bars were closing nearby when they heard gunshots at approximately 2:40 am. Officers found Ja’zier Myers, 20, with a gun at the scene in a stranger’s car.

Witnesses told police that they were in their car when Myers got in their vehicle with a gun, according to The Alachua Chronicle. They told police that the man refused to get out of their car until the officers approached, at which point Myers got out and dropped the gun. He was then detained.

A surveillance video that captured the deadly incident shows Myers walking by the first victim and shooting the person in the head. The second victim was also shot at close range, while the third was shot and injured while trying to run away.

According to police, Myers denied being in the area at the time of the shooting. After officers showed him images from the surveillance videos, he confirmed he was the person in the photos. When they told him that the person in the photos was the shooter in the murders, Myers reportedly denied being involved in a shooting. He told police that he could not remember what happened, positing that he could have been drugged.

Myers was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder.

The Gainesville Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
